CHARLIE

Charlie girl

rescued February 27, 2020

spayed and vaccinated August 24, 2020

Charlie was a hit-and-run victim along a busy street in San Juan city. I found her very near my apartment barely on the sidewalk with her tongue out and one of her eyes shot out of the socket.  A bystander said she's been there since early morning. I took a breath and uttered the same words when I met a frail Lukas on a street in Makati six years ago - it was Fuck it, let's see.   I went back to the apartment and got the cage and a bowl of water. I asked the bystander to help me find a taxi so I can bring Charlie to The Pet Project, the nearest veterinary hospital.

The vet said upon inspection that Charlie might not make it. They had her on IV overnight, administered antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds and had her X-rayed.  Luckily she had no bone fracture but her nerves were compromised- she still could not move for the next two days. I noticed this girl wants to live because on the third day she was able to use the litter box even if she was still very weak (there was also blood in her urine). She did not poop until the twelfth day (her movement is still uncoordinated hence a grand poop fest followed). We were giving her laxatives, antibiotics, eye drops, and feeding her recovery food slurry. (I observed that coconut oil helped with her bowel movement more than the over-the-counter laxative.) It was only after 19 days when she managed to walk without falling, and on the 20th day she can already eat without my help. Her dead eye eventually dried out but the other shone and got bigger.
